Be Aware: November is National Epilepsy Awareness month, an annual event that strives to educate people about epilepsy’s causes and symptoms. Epilepsy is a condition that affects the central nervous system and causes a person with epilepsy to experience a seizure when the brain’s overactive electrical signals misfire. [1] One in ten people will experience a seizure throughout their life, and one in 26 will develop epilepsy. While it may be scary to watch someone have a seizure, it is important to stay calm, to not restrain/hold the person, to help them lie down on their side on a flat, comfortable surface, to talk to them in a calm, reassuring voice throughout, and most importantly to not leave the person alone. Epilepsy has a long history of misunderstanding and stigmatism. [2] The disease was believed to be associated with spiritual possession and this resulted in the right to marry and to testify in court to be withdrawn from individuals suffering from epilepsy. These stigmas inspired the Epilepsy Foundation to introduce National Epilepsy Awareness Month in 1969 to help separate the disease from these false reputations. The Epilepsy Foundation provides support, funds innovative research, and educates the public about epilepsy and seizure first aid. [3] Derluxe introduces the BRIE cropped jacket to help support these efforts. Twenty percent of every single cropped jacket sold will be donated to the Epilepsy Foundation.
